PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots battled in their home finale, but ultimately came up just short 59-47 on Senior Night.
Lucy Cochrane had another stellar all-around game (17-11, 9-5) with six points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Maisie Burnham tacked on seven points, six rebounds and four steals and Emme Shearer chipped in as well with nine points, four assists and three steals. Kennedy Dickie was the only Pilot to score in double digits with 11 points.
Cochrane and Dickie were two of three seniors honored on the evening, with Kianna Hamilton also being recognized. Burnham and Shearer also earned recognition for reaching 1,000 points for their careers while Cochrane was honored for becoming the Pilots all-time block leader at the Division I level.
The Portland defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 14 San Francisco turnovers with 12 steals. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Burnham's four steals led the way individually for the Pilots.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-4, Portland went on a 6-0 run with 2:26 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Cochrane, to narrow the deficit to 15-10. San Francisco tacked on two more points, leaving the Pilots down 17-10 entering the second quarter.
Portland then started off the second quarter by going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Shearer, to tie the game at 17. Neither team was able to gain an edge by halftime, as the two squads entered the break tied at 28-28. Portland dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points close to the basket.
San Francisco proceeded to take over in the third quarter and the Pilots entered the fourth trailing 48-38. Portland could not pull any closer in the fourth, struggling offensively and losing by a final of 59-47.
Game Notes
» The Pilots held the Dons to only 38.7% shooting from the field. It's the 14th time they've held an opponent under 40% shooting this year.
» The Portland defense forced 14 turnovers with 12 steals. They've posted that many steals in 14 games this year.
» The Pilots were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording nine blocks as a team.
» Kennedy Dickie led the Pilots with 11 points.
» Cochrane's five blocks marked the sixth time she reached at least five blocks in a game.
