The Portland Pilots split their doubleheader with the Creighton Bluejays on Sunday, losing Game 1 before winning Game 2 to avoid the sweep. With his three total hits across both games, Pilot outfielder Jake Holcroft tied Jason Geis for the most career hits in program history at 257.

GAME 1 | Creighton 9, Portland 2
OMAHA, Neb. --Â The Pilots struggled to bring runners home in Game 1 of the doubleheader, stranding 11 runners in a 9-2 loss to Creighton. The loss officially gave Creighton the series. Sam Stuhr (0-1) got the ball to start for Portland (7-5) and took the loss.
Justin Ramirez was the lone Pilot batter to record multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-4 with a double for his first multi-hit game of the year and as a Pilot. Justin Tsukada also earned his first RBI hit of the season, going 1-for-2 with a double.
How it Happened.
It was a tough start for the Pilots, who gave up five runs in the first inning to immediately put themselves in a hole. Creighton went on to score four more runs between the fourth and seventh innings to further expand their lead.
Portland finally plated two runs off of Creighton pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Tsukada, in the top of the eighth. The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME 2 | Portland 6, Creighton 3
OMAHA, Neb. --Â Joey Gartrell was electric on the mound in Game 2, striking out eight Creighton hitters over 6.1 innings of work to help power the Portland Pilots past the Bluejays 6-3. The second game was seven innings.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Gartrell (2-2) went 6.1 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits and walking two for Portland (8-5).
Zach Toglia led the way offensively for the Pilots, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Jonas Salk compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI's. Jake Holcroft and Riley McCarthy also helped out, with Holcroft going 2-for-3 for Portland with a walk and McCarthy also hitting 2-for-3. Holcroft's two hits tied him with Jason Geis for the most career hits ever by a Pilot.
How it Happened
Trailing 1-0 after an RBI triple in the third for Creighton, the Pilots were able to overtake the Bluejays in the fourth. Portland's offense produced three runs, with home runs from both Salk and Toglia giving Portland a 3-1 lead.
The Bluejays failed to push any runs across before the Pilots offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning, with the Pilots scoring three runs off two errors to make it 6-1 Portland. Creighton put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Portland still held on for the 6-3 win.

» The second game of the doubleheader was just seven innings.
» Gartrell struck out eight Bluejays hitters, a season high. The total also matches his career high.
» The Pilots out-hit the Bluejays at a 9-5 clip.
» Portland pitchers limited Creighton to an 0-for-8 game with runners in scoring position.
» Portland pitchers faced 30 Creighton hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and three fly balls while striking out eight.
