PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots got three hits from Tristan Gomes, but costly errors came back to haunt them in a 9-8 loss to the Maryland Terrapins Saturday. The series is now split at 1-1.
Brock Gillis (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Portland (10-6). Sam Stuhr started the ballgame and went four innings, surrendering six runs with none earned on three hits, walking four and striking out seven.
In addition to his three hits, Gomes had a double and three RBI's to lead the Pilots. Evan Scavotto put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with two RBI's late in the contest.
How it Happened
The Pilots were trailing 4-0 after a litany of errors led to four runs for the Terrapins. The Pilots finally scored in the third inning after a sacrifice fly from Brady Bean helped Gomes come across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland.
The Pilots deficit grew to 7-1 after the Terrapins scored three more unearned. The Pilots finally cut into the lead in the seventh. Portland managed to push across two runs in the inning, which tightened the Terrapins lead to 7-3.
Maryland expanded their lead to 8-3 before the Portland offense got back to work, tying the ballgame at eight in the eighth. The Pilots bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Gomes and RBI singles from Jace Miller, Gage Bruce and Scavotto. Scavotto was thrown out at second on his RBI hit, leaving the score tied 8-8 with one inning to play.
Maryland scored off an RBI double to take the lead in the top of the ninth. The Pilots got a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't bring him home, leaving the score at a 9-8 final.

» Gomes led the Pilots, picking up three hits in the ballgame and three RBI's. Both totals are season highs, and his three hits are a career high with the Pilots.
» Portland's highest scoring inning was the eighth, when it pushed five runs across to tie the game.
» Portland went 4-for-11 (.364) with runners in scoring position.
» Portland pitchers limited Maryland to just 4-for-20 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
» Only one of Maryland's nine runs scored was earned.
» Portland pitchers faced 51 Maryland hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out 10.
» Gomes led the Pilots at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
