PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots took a 5-3 lead into the eighth inning, but could not hang on, dropping the series with a 7-6 loss to the Maryland Terrapins Sunday.
Kaden Segel (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Portland (10-7) and took the loss. Carter Gaston was a bright spot for the Pilots, earning his first start of the year and throwing five innings, giving up two runs, all earned, on six hits, with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Ben Patacsil led the way offensively for the Pilots, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and two RBI's. Jake Holcroft put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI's. Riley McCarthy also helped out, going 1-for-2 for Portland with a double.
How it Happened
Trailing 2-0 after a leadoff homer in the first and an RBI double in the second for Maryland, the Pilots first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Brady Bean came across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland on the sacrifice fly, getting the Pilots on the board.
The Pilots kept the deficit at 2-1 before taking the lead in the fifth. Portland picked up two runs when a single from Holcroft brought home Jack Thomson and Gage Bruce, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Pilots.
Maryland clawed back to even the ballgame at three before Portland reclaimed a 5-3 advantage in the sixth inning. The Pilots added two to their tally on Patacsil's two-run homer to left, his second of the year.
The lead did not remain intact for Portland. They gave up four runs in the top of the eighth, giving the Terps a 7-5 lead. The Pilots scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Jonas Salk in the ninth, bringing the score within one. But the Pilots were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
