SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – For the second time in her career, McKelle Meek was named to the WCC All-Academic First Team. Maisie Burnham, Emme Shearer and Lucy Cochrane all received honorable mention.
In order to qualify for the all-academic team, a student-athlete must hold at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be an important starter or reserve that has competed in at least 50% of their team's games. They also must hold at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence at their nominating institution.
Meek earned the honor with a 3.88 cumulative GPA as an accounting major. Meek has played in all 30 games for the Pilots this season with 29 starts, averaging 4.5 points and 3.4 assists per game. Meek led the Pilots in both assists per game and total assists (102), ranking eighth in the conference in assist average. Her 1.73 assist-to-turnover ratio is also fourth in the WCC.
The Pilots went 18-12 this season and 10-6 in WCC play to lock in the 3-seed for the 2024 WCC Women's Basketball Tournament. It's the third year in a row the Pilots have won at least 18 games, and it marks the first time since a stretch between 1995 and 1998 where the Pilots have won at least 18 games in a year. This is also the first time they've had back-to-back seasons with at least 10 wins in conference play since they did so in 1995-96 and 1996-97.
With the 3-seed in the tournament, the Pilots will take on the winner of the 6-seed and 7-seed matchup between the Saint Mary's Gaels and the LMU Lions. The Pilots play on Saturday, March 9 at 3:30 p.m. at the Orleans Arena. Stay tuned to PortlandPilots.com for more information.
