LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Kennedy Dickie scored 25 points to help lead the Portland Pilots past the LMU Lions 78-51 at the Orleans Arena Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Credit Union 1 WCC Women's Basketball Championships. The win advances the Pilots to the semifinals for the fourth time in five seasons.
The Pilots (19-12) had three players score in double figures, led by Dickie, who had 25 points and seven rebounds. Emme Shearer tacked on 17 points, four assists and three steals and Maisie Burnham chipped in as well with 12 points.
Portland forced 19 Loyola Marymount turnovers along with 11 steals. The Pilots turned those takeaways into 26 points on the offensive end of the floor. Shearer's three steals led the way for Portland.
How It Happened
Portland took an early lead and then battled with LMU to maintain that advantage early. The Pilots then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 19-16 advantage.
Portland built that first quarter lead to 32-23 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 3:45 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 41-23. The Lions cut into that lead, but the Pilots still enjoyed a 41-27 advantage heading into halftime.
Following intermission, Portland continued to expand its advantage, Using another 8-0 run to make it 55-32 deep into the third. Before the third period was over, the Pilots added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 61-37 edge.
Portland kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Dickie's three, to grow the lead to 74-47 with 4:43 to go in the contest. The Pilots held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 78-51 win.
Game Notes
» The Pilots held the Lions to only 37.7% shooting from the field. It's the 15th time they've held an opponent under 40% shooting this year.
» The Pilots never trailed after taking a 17-15 lead late in the first quarter.
» The Pilots shared the ball well, recording an assist on 77% of made field goals for 24 total. It's the sixth time they've had at least 20 assists in a game this year and the second time against LMU.
» Portland had a 33-27 edge on the boards in the win.
» The Portland defense forced 19 turnovers along with 11 steals.
» The Pilots were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying five blocks as a team.
» Kennedy Dickie led the Pilots with a game-high 25 points. It's the second highest point total any Pilot has scored in a game this season.
» Portland got a game-high seven rebounds from Dickie as well.
» This is the largest margin of victory for Portland in a WCC Tournament game since 1997, when they beat San Diego by 27 points.
» This is the most Portland has scored in a tournament game since 2012 when they scored 90 points against Santa Clara.
» The Pilots have made the semifinals four of the last five seasons.
