SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland men's tennis team came up short in a 4-0 loss to No. 15 San Diego Saturday afternoon at Hogan Tennis Center. The Pilots fall to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in WCC play, while the Toreros improve to 18-3 and 5-1 in league.
San Diego picked up the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the top and 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position. Portland's No. 3 tandem of Oscar Brown and Stefan Skobelev were trailing 5-4 when the point was clinched.
The Toreros won in straight sets at the top three singles positions to clinch the overall match. Portland's Maxim Groysman had just forced a third set against Stian Klaassen at No. 4 singles and USD was up a set at No. 5 and No. 6 when the remaining matches were abandoned.
"San Diego has kind of been the benchmark for mid major tennis standards the last few years," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "They are a legit top 15 team in the country. They've lost three times the entire year and one of those matches was without their top player. We had some nice moments in doubles after getting off to a slow start, and Max and Nikola were hanging in well during singles, but we were a bit overmatched at all spots. Add in playing on their home court where their comfort level and confidence is high and it was a tough challenge today. I don't think we played our best, but even if we had, this was still going to be a tough one. We will take what we can from it and see if we can finish strong in the last couple regular season matches."
The Pilots will visit another ranked WCC opponent in the No. 42 Pepperdine Waves. The match was originally scheduled for Sunday, but pushed back to Monday at 12:30 p.m. due to inclement weather.
