PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland baseball team's bats came alive early and often in a dominating 13-4 victory over San Diego Sunday to clinch the three-game West Coast Conference series and remain atop the league standings. Starter Calvin Schapira (3-1) took the loss for the Toreros (22-12, 8-4), who managed just four hits on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pilots scored at least one run in each of the first five innings to build a big cushion for Stuhr. Patacsil drilled a two-out, RBI single through the left side scoring Cooney to go up 1-0 in the first. Toglia belted a solo shot in the second and then Patacsil hammered a three-run homer down the left field line in the third to make it 5-0.
San Diego loaded the bases with one out in the fourth and got an RBI groundout from Justin Decriscio, but Stuhr limited the damage to just one run in the frame.
Toglia deposited his second bomb of the game to nearly the same spot to spark a five-run fourth inning. Holcroft added an RBI single and Bean sent a two-run triple to the right center gap. Patacsil finished the scoring with another run scoring base hit up the middle to make it 10-1.
Bean brought in two more runs with a single through the left side in the fifth inning and Tyler Howard capped Portland's scoring with a solo home run in the eighth.
Jakob Christian accounted for USD's final three runs with a two-run homer in the fifth and solo shot in the eighth.
