PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots saw their seven-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday with a 7-4 loss to the Oregon Ducks.
Kaden Segel (0-2) got the ball to start for Portland (17-9) and took the loss. Brock Gillis was a bright spot for the Pilots, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three scoreless innings, allowing no hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.
Offensively, the Pilots were led by Cooney, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a double and two RBI's. Senior Jake Holcroft furnished a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Evan Scavotto also chipped in for Portland, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots were trailing 3-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Portland managed to push across two runs in the inning, one off a sacrifice fly and another off a wild pitch.
The Ducks expanded their lead to 7-2 before the Pilots offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the sixth. Portland pushed across a run on Cooney's one-out RBI double, which brought the score to 7-3 in favor of the Ducks.
Portland held the Ducks off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 7-4 in the eighth. The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
