SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Portland men's tennis has qualified for the 2024 WCC Tournament and will face the Pacific Tigers in Thursday's opening round at 10 a.m. The event will be held at the Aztec Tennis Center on the San Diego State University campus.
The tournament field features the top six teams in the league's final regular season standings, with the top two seeds earning first round byes. The Pilots are the No. 6 seed and will face the No. 3 Tigers, who dealt Portland a 4-1 loss in Stockton, Calif. on April 6. The winner advances to face No. 2 Pepperdine in a semifinal match on Friday at 10 a.m. The championship match is Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Pilots finished the regular season with a 9-9 overall record and 3-5 mark in league play. Portland was 8-1 in home matches on the season. The team had a difficult close to the season with four losses, three coming against nationally ranked opponents.
Portland senior Oscar Brown anchored the top of the singles lineup and finished with an 8-8 dual record. Junior Maxim Groysman recorded an 11-4 singles record, primarily at the No. 4 position, while freshman Stefan Skobelev (6-3), sophomore Nikola Keremedchiev (9-4) and senior Nicolas Ocana (9-9) also were .500 or better in dual singles. Brown and Skobelev also teamed up for a 10-4 dual doubles record.
Pacific (16-4, 5-3 WCC) is No. 48 in the latest ITA National Rankings.
