HILLSBORO, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots kept it a tight contest most of the way but ultimately fell 7-2 to the No. 9 Oregon State Beavers at Ron Tonkin Field.
Brock Gillis (0-2) got the ball to start for Portland (23-15) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out three. He threw five shutout innings before conceding a home run in the sixth. The Pilots had just two hits on the day, with one each from Ben Patacsil and Riley McCarthy.
How it Happened
It was a pitchers' duel through and through until the sixth inning, with the Beavers getting on the board first on a three-run homer courtesy of Elijah Hainline. Trailing 3-0, the Pilots first put a run on the board in the sixth inning as well. Evan Scavotto came across to score the lone run of the inning on a sacrifice fly for Portland and get them on the board.
The Pilots kept the Beavers off the board before narrowing the gap further in the seventh. McCarthy scored off the error by Oregon State, which tightened the Beavers lead to 3-2. The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as Oregon State added four runs across the final two innings to take the win.
