SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 56 Pacific Thursday in the opening round of the WCC Tournament at Aztec Tennis Center. The Pilots conclude the 2024 season with a 9-10 record, while the Tigers (17-4) move on to face Pepperdine in the semifinals.
Pacific grabbed the early lead by taking a hard-fought doubles point. The Tigers posted a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Portland No. 1 tandem of Nikolas Tvedt and Luka Vukovic pulled out a tiebreak win over Peter Alam and Justas Trainauskas. Pacific was able to secure the point with a 7-5 win at the No. 2 position.
Oscar Brown and Stefan Skobelev won their opening sets for the Pilots at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively, but the Tigers picked up points with straight set wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 3 to clinch the match.
"It's never fun to lose and know that the season is over," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "The doubles point was critical, and there was two first set tiebreakers in the singles that really could have swung the momentum that we ended up dropping. It's been a long second half of the season and we don't have a ton of gas left in the tank, but I think we gave everything we had today. They were just a little bit better at some crucial moments."
