SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland women's tennis team fell 4-0 to Pacific Thursday in the opening round of the WCC Tournament at Aztec Tennis Center. The Pilots conclude the 2024 season with a 10-12 record, while the Tigers (14-6) move on to face San Diego in the semifinals.
Portland battled during doubles play with Alaia Rubio Perez and Rimona Rouf cruising to a 6-1 win at the No. 3 position. After Pacific won at No. 1 doubles, the Tigers secured the point with a tiebreak win at the No. 2 position to go ahead 1-0.
The Pilots won opening sets at No. 2 and No. 4 singles via Sally Pethybridge and Rubio Perez, respectively, but Pacific cruised at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 to put the match away. Pethybridge was leading 5-2 in the second set when the match was abandoned.
It was the final match for Portland seniors Iva Zelic, Rimona Rouf and Rose Watanabe. Zelic concluded one of the most decorated careers for the Pilots by earning first team All-WCC honors in both singles and doubles (with partner Pethybridge) this season.
