MALIBU, Calif. -- Portland got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely for the second game in a row, helping the Pilots put 10 runs on the board and take down the Pepperdine Waves 10-3 Saturday.
Carter Gaston (10-1) started on the mound and picked up his 10th win for Portland (30-17, 15-5). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on nine hits, allowing three walks and striking out one. Gaston ties the school record for wins in a season with the victory today and becomes the first WCC pitcher to reach 10 wins on the year. Morgan Codron also made an impact on the mound for the Pilots, throwing four scoreless innings while allowing three hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
At the plate, the Pilots were led by Zach Toglia, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Tyler Howard put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBI's. Christian Cooney also batted 2-for-5 while Ben Patacsil was 2-for-4 at the plate.
With the win, the Pilots have reached 30 wins in each of the last three seasons for the first time in program history. They also reached 15 wins in WCC play for the third season in a row and the fifth time in program history.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Portland scored three times in the inning on a single from Patacsil that was followed by a series of errors from Pepperdine, allowing Patacsil and Spencer Scott to score as well as Howard off the single. The Pilots led 3-0 after the inning.
The Waves failed to push any runs across before the Pilots offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Portland picked up two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from Scott, which brought the Pilots lead to 5-0.
Pepperdine narrowed Portland's lead to 5-3 before the Pilots stretched the advantage to 6-3 in the sixth inning. The Pilots notched a run on Howard's two-out solo home run, his third of the year.
Portland kept the Waves scoreless before building on their lead in the eighth inning. bringing the score to 9-3 in favor of Portland. Toglia hit a solo shot in the inning and Jake Holcroft and Jack Thomson each had RBI singles to add three runs to the Pilots' total.
The Pilots kept Pepperdine scoreless before expanding their lead to 10-3 the following inning. Portland scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Toglia. The score remained 10-3 for the rest of the game, as the Pilots coasted to the win.

» This is the third year in a row the Pilots have eclipsed at least 30 wins on the season. It's the first time in program history they have done so three years in a row.
» The Pilots have posted at least 15 wins in WCC play in each of the last three years, which is also a first for the program. They have only reached at least 15 wins in WCC play five times as a program.
