MALIBU, Calif. -- Sam Stuhr and Tanner Douglas combined to throw a shutout on Sunday as the Portland Pilots blanked the Pepperdine Waves 4-0 to complete the sweep. It's the fourth sweep of the year for the Pilots against a WCC opponent.
Stuhr started on the mound for Portland (31-17, 16-5 WCC), going 6.1 shutout innings while giving up three hits, walking two, and striking out three. Douglas (4-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen and went 2.2 shutout innings, allowing one hit.
Eight different Pilots recorded a hit on Sunday. Jonas Salk was the lone batter to drive in a run off a hit, going 1-for-5 with two RBI's. Jake Holcroft had a historic day as he broke his fifth program record of the year, playing in his 218th game, the most of any Pilot in program history. Holcroft also moved up to a tie for third all-time in WCC history in career hits, now sitting at 306.
How it Happened
It was a classic pitcher's duel the majority of the game, with neither team giving any ground. The Pilots took the lead finally in the eighth, scoring for the first time in the inning. Salk drove in two runs for Portland with a single, bringing home Jake Holcroft and Jack Thomson. The Pilots then tacked on runs in the ninth inning off a fielder's choice and a hit by pitch to put the score at its 4-0 final.
