LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Zach Toglia and Brady Bean each hit two home runs and Jake Holcroft racked up the RBI's to help lead the Portland Pilots past the Gonzaga Bulldogs 21-3 on Friday. The win puts the Pilots in the WCC Championship for the second year in a row and the second time in program history.
Kaden Segel (1-4) got the win out of the bullpen for Portland (37-18). The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on three hits, allowing three walks and striking out three. Sam Stuhr started the ballgame and went three shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out five.
Bean added two RBI's to his two homer day and Toglia supplemented his own two big flies with three RBI's for the Pilots. Jake Holcroft also chipped in for Portland, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double, a triple, a walk and eight RBI's. Holcroft's eight RBI's are the most since Geoff Loomis, current Portland head coach, hit nine back in 1991.
With the win, the Pilots have set a program record for wins in a season at 37, surpassing the previous high set back in 1980. The Pilots have also earned 21 wins against WCC opponents this year.
How it Happened
The Pilots put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Portland hit three home runs all back-to-back-to-back in the inning on the way to scoring 10 runs.
The Pilots then held the Bulldogs scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. The Portland offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Holcroft and a two-run home run from Toglia, which brought the score to 16-0 in favor of the Pilots.
Portland held Gonzaga scoreless before expanding their lead to 19-0 the following inning. The Pilots recorded three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Holcroft.
Portland held the Bulldogs scoreless before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Pilots picked up a run on Bean's one-out solo homer, bringing the score to 20-0 in favor of Portland.
The Pilots held Gonzaga without a run before building on their lead to 21-0 the following inning. Jace Miller came across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland and get them on the board. Gonzaga put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Pilots still coasted to the 21-3 win.
