PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer has added forward Alex Waggoner to the roster for the Fall 2024 season. Waggoner joins the Pilots as a sophomore with two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are excited to add Alex Waggoner to the Portland soccer family," Portland Head Coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "We haven't relied on the portal recently to bring in attacking players, but one of our priorities for the off-season was to add more dangerous attackers with a history of scoring to help offset the production due to graduation and guys going pro."
Waggoner joins Portland after a stellar freshman season with the Michigan Wolverines. Waggoner was the leading scorer for Wolverines, scoring six goals for 12 points on the year. Three of those goals proved to be game-winners, Waggoner's goals against Cal Baptist, Cleveland State and Northwestern giving the Wolverines the win. He played in 18 matches with 12 starts on the year.

The product from New Mexico had an accomplished resume before beginning his collegiate career as well. He played USL Championship side New Mexico United on the first team and was also the USL Academy League Final National Golden Boot Award winner. With Santa Fe High School, he was the Gatorade Player of the Year his junior season and led his team to two state titles. He was a United Soccer Coaches All-American and the New Mexico Player of the Year aas well.
"Alex is a hard-working center forward who loves to arrive in the box and loves scoring goals," Carlin-Voigt said. "Alex wants to be pushed and we think we can bring the best out of him in our player development environment. Alex is someone who will continue to improve driving his career as he has a growth mindset, is a team first guy and loves to process of improving. He had a good freshman year in the Big Ten at Michigan and he understands the opportunity at hand here in Soccer City USA."
The Pilots are coming off a historic year that saw them rank as high as third in the nation as they went 12-5 overall to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the third season in a row and the fifth time in seven fall seasons. They earned a first-round bye for the first time since 1988 after earning the 11-seed in the tournament and have made it to the second round each of the last three years, being one of just 11 teams in the nation to do so.
Portland has been one of the most exciting programs in the country, leading the nation in combined goals per game over the last two years (2.52). They set a program record with a home unbeaten streak that extended to 28 games (26-0-2) dating back to the 2021 season. The Pilots had three players taken in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, the most in program history, with Kevin Bonilla, Jacob Babalai and Buba Fofanah all being selected. Portland is 10th in the country in NCAA Director Cup points from NCAA Participation the last three years.
