INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The complete NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) were released on Tuesday and the University of Portland continues to perform at a high level as all Pilot athletics programs remain in good standing.
Men's and women's tennis both posted perfect multi-year rates and were joined by men's cross country, women's soccer and women's indoor volleyball with perfect single-year scores for 2022-23.
Six Pilot programs either maintained or increased their multiyear APR score from last year's publicly released data.
"Academic integrity and putting student-athletes in position to succeed in the classroom is a priority for our department," Portland Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam said. "With more transfers and movement in our industry than ever, it is important that our coaches are bringing in the right recruits and our support staff is providing the necessary resources to achieve at a high level. By every metric our programs continue to excel both in competition and in the classroom, and that will continue to be our emphasis."
Each academic year, every Division I sports team's APR is calculated using a simple and consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and 1 point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term. For schools that do not offer athletics scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
This is the third consecutive year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Division I board approved the release of APR scores but voted to continue the suspension of program penalties. After further review, the Committee on Academics is not enforcing the loss of access to postseason competition for teams that have scored lower than 930. Instead, a conditional waiver is being offered this year due to lingering impacts of COVID-19.
A full list of APRs for each team, including the Top 10, can be accessed by using the APR searchable database.
