ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Portland senior goalkeeper Bre Norris was one of 44 NCAA Division I women's soccer players in the nation named to the 2024 Hermann Trophy Watch List, the United Soccer Coaches announced on Thursday.
The Hermann Trophy is presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club and is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by voting of Division I head coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches. It is named in honor of the late Robert Hermann, the legendary St. Louis, Mo., businessman and soccer executive who founded the National Professional Soccer League, the first pro soccer league in the United States which became the North American Soccer League. He was inducted in the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012.
Norris is one of just five goalkeepers to garner recognition this year and becomes the first Portland player since Amanda Frisbie in 2013 to be named to the watch list.
Norris was named the West Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year last season after a stellar season between the sticks. She was the first Pilot ever to win the award – which was introduced in 2011 – and was also an All-WCC First Team selection. Norris led the conference in goals-against average (.529), shutouts (11) and save percentage (.836), and nationally she was eighth in shutouts and 11th in goals-against average. Norris was also a United Soccer Coaches All-West Region First Team selection, and this year she was named to the All-WCC Preseason Team and a 'Goalkeeper to Watch' by the United Soccer Coaches.
The 2024 watch list was compiled by members of the Division I Women's All-America Council from a list of returning 2023 All-Americans and First Team All-Region players. A total of 15 players will be named 2024 Hermann Trophy semifinalists on December 4 at the conclusion of NCAA Division I All-American voting. From that list, head coaches will cast votes, and three players will be named finalists. The 2024 recipient will be announced January 3, 2025, in a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis, Mo.
University of Portland has a rich history with the Hermann Trophy as Shannon Mac Millan (1995) and Christine Sinclair (2004, 2005) won the award. Only North Carolina, Stanford, Florida State and Notre Dame have more trophy winners than Portland. The Pilots have had a total of 17 players named to the Watch List since it began in 2002.
Portland opens the season on the road against the Cal Poly Mustangs tonight at 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
