PORTLAND, Ore. -- Elianna Wong and Hailey Still scored two goals each in leading Portland to a 7-0 shutout victory against Stonehill College Sunday in the 2024 Cross and Anchors Classic at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Portland improved to 1-0-1 on the season with the win, while the Skyhawks fall to 0-2-0.
The Cross and Anchors Classic highlights a pair of institutions guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross. The Pilots defeated Stonehill 4-0 last September in the inaugural Cross and Anchors Classic in Easton, Mass.
The last time Portland scored seven goals in a game was a 7-4 win versus Saint Mary's on Oct. 16, 2011. The seven-goal margin was most since a 9-0 win against UTSA in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA playoffs.
How it Happened
The Pilots wasted little time in setting the tone as Still's third-minute goal put the home side up early. She firmly headed in a corner kick delivered by Isabella Yakel inside the right post.
Cally Togiai doubled the margin in the 23rd minute with a hard strike from 25 yards out inside the left post. It was her second goal in as many games to open the 2024 campaign.
Portland delighted the crowd with a sublime set piece goal in the 32nd minute as Yakel sprung Wong free down the left side. Her first-touch, left-footed attempt from 25 yards out floated just under the crossbar to give the Pilots a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Kayla Adams made it 4-0 in the 60th minute with a diving header on a service from Hailey Bagby.
Still, a grad transfer from Washington, scored her second of the afternoon in the 61st minute after drawing a penalty kick and beating Stonehill goalkeeper Kelsey Bello.
Bagby got into the action in the 65th minute by collecting a loose ball in the goal box and depositing it inside the left post.
Wong capped the scoring with an Olympico, beating Bello direct off of a corner kick in the 72nd minute.
