NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots lost 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 19-25, 14-25) to the CSUN Matadors on Saturday at the Premier America Credit Union Arena. The final non-conference defeat brings Portland's season record to 7-3.Â
Lia Hawken led the Pilots' attack with a match-high 14 kills, while Taina Kaauwai added 13 kills with a .524 hitting percentage. On the defensive side, three Pilots players had double-digit digs: Tinoa Woodward-Hart with 15, alongside Havannah Hoeft and Maui Robins with 12 each.Â

How It HappenedÂ
SET 1 | The Pilots fought hard in the first set, which saw 12 ties before CSUN managed to pull ahead for a 25-18 win. Portland kept the game close until CSUN gained momentum late in the set. Â
SET 2 | Portland bounced back in the second set with a strong 26-24 win, evening the match at 1-1. The Pilots took control early at 3-2 and maintained their lead, going up by as many as four points at 10-6. They collected 17 kills and were boosted by three aces, showing great offensive energy. Â
SET 3 | Despite another competitive set, the Pilots fell 25-19 in the third. Portland kept it close, tying the Matadors five times, but CSUN pulled ahead at 18-17 and held on for the win, leaving the Pilots with a 2-1 deficit. Â
SET 4 | In the final set, Portland struggled to regain momentum, losing 25-14. Although the Pilots couldn't recover the lead, they put up a solid effort throughout the match.Â
