PORTLAND, Ore. -- The No. 18 Portland Pilots and the Utah Tech Trailblazers played to a 1-1 tie Sunday at Merlo Field, the first tie for the Pilots since 2022. Portland moved to 2-2-1 overall with the tie. Nick Fernandez scored the lone goal for Portland, doing so on a penalty kick.
How it Happened
Utah Tech took a 1-0 lead when Austin Wallace scored in the fifth minute, assisted by Gavin Coe and Bryce Backlund. The Pilots leveled the game on a penalty kick from Nick Fernandez in the 16th minute, taking advantage of a handball from Utah Tech.
Portland was aggressive in the attack, outshooting the Trailblazers 27-7. A red card in the 67th minute for the Trailblazers gave Portland another chance to take advantage, but nothing came to fruition. The game ended at 1-1.
