PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland overcame a 10-point second half deficit to force overtime but came up short in an 86-80 loss to Northern Colorado Saturday on the second day of the Portland Invitational presented by Courtyard Portland North Marriott at Chiles Center.
The Pilots (4-2) had five players score in double figures, led by Cameron Williams, who had 15 points and eight rebounds. James O'Donnell tacked on 14 points and Matus Hronsky chipped in with 12 points. Timo George and Mikah Ballew added 11 and 10 points off the bench, respectively.
Portland point guard Joel Foxwell flirted with a triple double and finished with nine points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.
The Bears (4-1) were carried by Quinn Denker who finished with 29 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Denker hit a big three late in overtime and iced the game by making eight straight free throws.
How It Happened
Portland's freshman tandem of Foxwell and George each scored nine points in a closely contested first half that featured four ties and nine lead changes. Neither team led by more than five points as both went just 1 for 11 from three-point range. The Bears took a 35-32 lead into the break after Brock Wisne converted a putback just before the buzzer.
Northern Colorado drilled six consecutive three-pointers to open the second half and take a 61-51 lead before Portland went on a 12-0 run, finished off by an O'Donnell layup, to take a 63-61 lead with 5:10 to go in the contest. The teams exchanged leads before Hronsky converted two free throws for a 69-67 lead with 1:08 remaining. Denker tied it with a runner in the paint with 16 seconds left and Portland's baseline runner by Garrett Nuckolls rimmed off just before the regulation buzzer.
Portland led 73-71 on another O'Donnell basket before UNC used a 10-2 run to take control including a big triple from Denker who then iced the game at the foul line.
