PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots cruised to a win to close out nonconference play, defeating the Portland State Vikings 98-53 to take down their crosstown opponent. The Pilots enter WCC play at 6-6.
Five Pilots scored in double digits on Sunday. Dyani Ananiev led the way with 17 points and four steals, setting a season high for scoring. It's tied for the most points by any Pilot in a single game this season. Julia Dalan matched her career high with 13 points, adding four rebounds and two blocks.
Florence Dallow scored 11 points for her fifth game in double digits while adding a career high four assists. Lainey Spear had 11 points and also posted a career best five assists while Tiffany Barbosa set a career high with 14 points herself along with six boards and three steals.
The Pilots were dominant from the jump, outscoring the Vikings 58-19 in the first half. Dalan had scored her season-high 13 points all in the first half while Ananiev had 15 of her 17 against the Vikings in the opening 20 minutes. The Pilots shot 61% overall with 29 assists, the highest assist total ever for Portland against a Division I opponent.
Portland had 13 steals and forced 19 turnovers, led by Ananiev's four steals. They held the Vikings to just 35% shooting overall. With 98 points, the Pilots set a season best for points scored against a Division I opponent and scored their highest total in regulation against a Division I opponent since they put up the same total in 2009 against Sacramento State.
How it Happened
Portland got off to a hot start, clamping down the Vikings defensively and capitalizing on the other end. Portland rushed out to a 20-2 lead early in the first and forced seven quick turnovers. The Pilots shot a whopping 86.7% in the quarter led by 13 points from Dyani Ananiev, leading the Pilots to their highest scoring quarter against a Division I team this season. The Pilots held a 35-12 advantage after the first.
The second period began with much of the same. Portland rushed out to a 9-2 run to make 42-14 early, blitzing the Vikings. Portland cooled down slightly but still held the Vikings in check, with the Vikings shooting just 18.8% from the field. The Pilots outscored the Vikings 23-7 in the period, shooting 62.2% from the field and 63.6% from outside the arc in the first half for a 58-19 lead. Ananiev and Julia Dalan had 15 and 13 points in the first half respectively, with Dalan's first half total matching a season high.
The Vikings kept better pace in the third quarter, but Portland still held an advantage, forcing the action inside and shooting well at 60%. 16 of Portland's 23 points in the quarter came in the paint as they led 81-37 through three. Portland cruised the rest of the way for the dominant win.
Game Notes
- Dalan matched a season high with 13 points while Ananiev's 17 was a new season high.
- Dallow scored in double digits for the fifth time this year while Spear did so for the fourth time.
- Barbosa's 12 points are a career high. It's the first time she's crested the double-digit mark in her career.
- Ananiev's point total is the most she's had since her freshman year and is tied for the most by a Pilot this year.
- Portland's 35 points in the first quarter were the most for the Pilots against a Division I team in a single quarter this year. They shot a season-best 86.7% from the field as well.
- In total, the Pilots shot 61% from the field and 50% from outside the arc on eight makes.
- Portland's 29 assists are the most by the Pilots in a Division I game ever.
- The Pilots had 13 steals and forced 19 turnovers as a team, led by Ananiev's four steals. She's got 35 steals now on the season.
- The Pilots turned 19 turnovers into 35 points on the offensive end.
- Portland cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 14 offensive boards in the game. Portland got a game-high eight rebounds from Nicole Rodriguez.
- Dalan reached 40 blocks on the year with two rejections on the day. She has the most in a season by a freshman since Rachel Warren in the 2005-06 season.
