PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's basketball team kept Washington State to just 37.7 percent shooting from the field, but fell 67-62 to the Cougars at home Sunday in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.
Mikah Ballew and Joel Foxwell scored 15 points apiece to pace the Pilots (7-7, 0-1 WCC). Foxwell added six rebounds and six assists and Matus Hronsky added seven points and four steals.
Portland struggled offensively and finished at just 30.8 percent overall and 8-for-31 from three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 26-16, Portland went on a 5-0 run with 3:33 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 26-21. Washington State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Pilots down 32-23 entering halftime. Portland was 0-for-11 from three-point range in the period.
Portland came out of halftime clicking on all cylinders, going on a 12-0 run, finished off by Foxwell's three, to seize a 35-32 lead. The run extended to 22-5 after a Jermaine Ballisager Webb triple made it 45-37 with 10:34 remaining.
The Cougars (6-8, 1-0) re-asserted control with a 12-0 run as Portland was held scoreless for more than five minutes. The lead grew to 12 at 61-49 with 1:43 left, but the Pilots had one more surge to make it interesting.
Ballew scored 10 straight points with a pair of threes and four free throws to cut the deficit to 63-59 with 46 seconds to go. Hronsky's three made it a one possession game at 65-62 with nine ticks left, but the Cougars converted a long pass for a layup following a timeout to secure the victory.
