PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots dropped their contest against the BYU Cougars on Saturday 87-53 at the Chiles Center. The loss puts Portland at 4-5 on the season.
Julia Dalan was the top player for Portland, posting 13 points, four rebounds and five blocks on the day. Her five blocks gives her 32 on the year, the most by a true freshman since Alex Fowler in the 2019-20 season. Dalan was the only double-digit scorer for Portland, followed closely behind by Rhyan Mogel, who posted nine points and five assists.
Portland struggled shooting the ball, hitting shots at just a 32.7% clip. Defensively, Portland had seven blocks and nine steals, forcing 15 BYU turnovers in total.
How it Happened
The Cougars rushed out to an 8-2 lead in the first, using their physicality. BYU created numerous chances crashing the boards on offense. Portland rallied back from a deficit as big as six to cut the Cougars' lead to two points before the end of the quarter, with Julia Dalan's six points leading the way.
Portland put together an 8-2 run of their own in the middle of the second to take a lead for the first time in the game. Mogel had six points in the quarter and the Pilots held the Cougars to just 15.8% shooting to take charge briefly. BYU, however, ended the second period with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 32-31 lead at the half.
BYU blazed out the gate to a 16-0 run to start the third and never looked back, outscoring the Pilots 29-10 overall in the quarter. The Pilots never closed the gap, falling 87-53.
