MALIBU, Calif. -- Buoyed by double-doubles from Maisie Burnham and Alexis Mark, the Portland Pilots defeated the Pepperdine Waves 77-75 in an overtime thriller in Malibu
The Pilots (22-3, 11-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Maisie Burnham, who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Alexis Mark tacked on a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds and Meek chipped in as well with 11 points.
Portland out-rebounded Pepperdine 42-34 in Monday's game, led by Mark's 12 boards. The Pilots also grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second chance points.
How It Happened
It was a tight first quarter, with the Pepperdine Waves earning a narrow lead late in the period to hold a 19-16 advantage after one. The Pilots fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 38-36 by the time halftime rolled around.
Pepperdine continued to put the Pilots in a hole early before Portland finally put together a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Mark, to grab a 52-50 lead with 2:09 to go in the third. Pepperdine hit a three-pointer late in the third to make it 53-52 Waves with a quarter to play.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team gaining a clear advantage. The Pilots hit one of two free throws with 25 seconds to play before giving up a late layup to the Waves. The Pilots couldn't respond, with game tied at 66-66 at the end of regulation.
Overtime was as even as regulation, with the Pilots and Waves trading basketball before back-to-back buckets from Burnham and two crucial late free throws from Lainey Spear gave Portland the 77-72 lead.. The Waves hit a late three-pointer to make 77-75 at its final.
Game Notes
» Portland got double-doubles from both Maisie Burnham and Alexis Mark. It's the third of the year for Burnham and the fourth for Mark.
» Mark is the first Pilot since Alex Fowler in the 2021-22 season to have at least four double-doubles in a season.
» This is Portland's second overtime game this year and their first overtime victory.
» Portland recorded 16 total assists in the game.
» Portland had a 42-34 edge on the boards in the win. Portland cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 17 offensive boards in the game.
» The Portland defense forced 14 turnovers with seven steals.
» Maisie Burnham led the Pilots with a game-high 21 points. This is her 10th 20-point game this year.
» Burnham is the first Pilot since Alex Fowler in the 2022-23 season to have at least 10 20-point games.
» Alexis Mark grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to lead Portland and Maisie Burnham contributed 11.
» This is the Pilots' best record through 25 games since the 1996-97.
