SEATTLE, Wash. – Portland freshman Lucas Kimelman earned a three-set singles victory but the Pilots fell to Washington 6-1 Sunday in men's tennis action at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies improve to 7-0 this season, while the Pilots fall to 3-2 overall.
Kimelman defeated Ivan Sodan at No. 5 singles by a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 margin to improve to 4-1 this Spring in dual singles matches.
The Huskies won the other five singles matches in straight sets and picked up the doubles point with wins at the top two positions.
"This is probably the best Washington team in recent history," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We competed well in a few spots, especially lower in the lineup. Lucas played great and Cade (Fernando) hung in there right till the end. We had some other guys who were pretty competitive, but I think the Huskies were just too good for us tonight. It's a good match for us to get ready for New Mexico tomorrow at home. I think we have some things that we can build on from this."
The Pilots will welcome New Mexico to Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center for an 11 a.m. match on Monday. Live coverage links are available at PortlandPilots.com.
