PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Pilots pitcher Ryan Rembisz made history on Tuesday, throwing the 37th perfect game in NCAA Division I history, the 21st in a nine-inning game and the first in Pilot history.
The left-hander struck out 12 for Portland (3-5) on his way to the record books, also a career-high and the most by a Pilot pitcher this season. This is the fourth time a Pilot pitcher has thrown a no-hitter, the first time since 1958 and the first time in nine innings ever.
In the batter's box, the Pilots were led by Jonas Salk, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBI's. Curtis Hebert put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Tyler Howard also helped out for Portland, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots had two big innings to put them ahead, putting up four runs in the first and third innings. Jonas Salk hit a home run and the first and Tyler Howard had an RBI single as well in the first, with the other two runs coming in off errors from Seattle U. In the third inning, Salk, Spencer Scott and Gage Bruce all had RBI hits to make it 8-0 Pilots.
The rest of the game was highlighted by the dominance of Rembisz. The lefty downed 12 batters on his own through nine innings, rendering the Redhawk bats scoreless.
The final out came on a slow grounder to third. Cole Katayama-Stall collected the grounder and made the tough throw to first. Zach Toglia collected, leading to history.
