PORTLAND, Ore. -- Cole Katayama-Stall hit the walk-off double deep to left to give the Portland Pilots the 5-4 win over the Utah Tech Trailblazers. The win evens the series.
JT Landwehr (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Portland (4-6). The right-hander went 2.2 shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing one walk and striking out two. Curtis Hebert started for the Pilots, pitching 6.1 innings with four runs allowed, five hits and three strikeouts.
Three Pilots earned multiple hits on the day, with Doyle Kane, Zach Toglia and Frankie Rutigliano all going 2-for-4 on the day. Kane, who made his Pilot debut, when 2-for-4 with two RBI's and Toglia hit a home run.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Portland scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Doyle Kane, his first hit as a Pilot.
The Pilots lost the lead they built in the first after Utah Tech hit a grand slam in the sixth. Henry Muench came across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland in the seventh, which tightened the Trailblazers lead to 4-3.
Portland kept the Trailblazers off the scoreboard before rallying to even it up at four in the eighth. The Pilots added a run on Toglia's one-out solo home run off Max Miller.
In the final inning, Jonas Salk made it to second with Katayama-Stall up to bat. Katayama-Stall sent it flying to left field, giving Salk more than enough time to round the bases and get home. The Pilots won 5-4.
Game Notes
» The Pilots power output was led by Toglia, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame including a home run. The homer was his second of the year.
» Toglia shined at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and an RBI.
» The Pilots out-hit the Trailblazers at a 9-7clip.
» Portland pitchers faced 34 Utah Tech hitters in the game, allowing 11 ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out five.
» The Pilots drew five walks from Utah Tech pitching.
» Doyle Kane starred with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Kane added two RBI's as well.
» Katayama-Stall went 1-for-2, with his one hit being the walk-off.
