LAS CRUCES, NM -- All starters reached base safely in the contest, but the Portalnd Pilots still fell to the New Mexico State Aggies 12-5 Friday. The loss gives the Aggies the opening game of the series.
Kaden Segel (1-3) started and took the loss on the mound for Portland (5-13). Kaden Starr was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three innings, surrendering just one run and one hit and striking out four.
Offensively, Tyler Howard and Brady Bean were the only two Pilots to record multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-5 respectively. Howard added an RBI as well. Jonas Salk and Curtis Hebert each hit home runs as well, the third and second of the year for each Pilot respectively.
How it Happened
The Pilots were trailing 3-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Salk put Portland on the board with a leadoff home run off Jack Turner, making it 3-1 Portland.
The Aggies put up four straight on Portland across the third and fourth innings before the Pilots got back on the board in the fifth. Portland scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Howard, which brought the score to 7-2 in favor of the Aggies.
Portland held the Aggies off the board before narrowing the gap to 7-3 in the sixth, with Toglia getting credit for the RBI. But the Aggies expanded their lead to 11-3 with a four-run inning in the sixth.
Hebert's two-run homer in the eighth helped close the gap slightly, bringing the score to 11-5 in favor of New Mexico State. But the Pilots were unable to get any closer, as the Aggies added the insurance run on their way to a 12-5 win.
