STOCKTON, Calif. -- The bats were hot for the Portland Pilots as they took down the Pacific Tigers 14-9 in Stockton for their first win in WCC play. The Pilots have won 13 straight games now against the Tigers dating back to 2021.
Curtis Hebert (1-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Portland (7-15, 1-0 WCC). The right-hander went five innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on two hits, allowing four walks and striking out five.
Tyler Howard continued his hot streak at the plate, batting 3-for-5 for his sixth straight multi-hit game in a row. In addition to his three hits, Howard had a double, a walk and an RBI to lead the Pilots and extend his overall hitting streak to 11. Bean added two doubles and three RBI's to his three-hit performance as well. Nitowitz also chipped in for Portland, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI. Zach Toglia rounded out the multi-hit batters, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
How it Happened
Trailing 2-0, the Pilots first put runs on the board in the third inning. Portland got on the board thanks to Bean's RBI double with two outs.
The Pilots' deficit expanded to 3-1 before their offense kicked it into high gear, taking the lead in the fourth inning. The Portland offense exploded for eight runs, produced by five RBI hits, a score off a sac fly and another off a wild pitch that made it 9-3 Portland through four innings.
Pacific narrowed Portland's lead to 9-4 before the Pilots stretched the advantage to 10-4 in the seventh inning off a sac fly from Salk. The Tigers closed the gap to 10-5 in the same inning until Portland added some insurance in the eighth. Bean's run-scoring single brought home one run in a two-run output for the Pilots, bringing the Portland advantage to 12-5.
Pacific got within 12-6 until the Pilots scored again in the ninth inning to stretch its lead to 14-6 off RBI hits from Nitowitz and Howard. Pacific put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Pilots still coasted to the 14-9 win.
