STOCKTON, Calif. -- Carter Gaston struck out 10 Pacific hitters over eight innings of work to help lead the Portland Pilots over the Tigers 8-4. The win clinches the series for Portland.
In addition to his 10 strikeouts, Gaston (2-4) threw eight innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits and walking none for Portland (8-15, 2-0). His 10 strikeouts are a career-high.
Offensively, three Pilots posted multiple hits on the day, led by Cody Nitowitz's two hits and two RBI's. Nitowitz also drew two walks. Riley McCarthy went 2-for-4 with an BRI while Brady Bean went 2-for-5 with two RBI's. Jonas Salk plated two runners with a double as well.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Portland got an RBI single from Riley McCarthy, scoring Salk from second base.
After the Tigers tied the ballgame at one, the Pilots came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Portland scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Bean, which brought the Pilots' lead to 2-1.
Pacific fired back to tie the ballgame at two before Portland reclaimed a 4-2 advantage in the fifth inning. Bean's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Pilots.
Portland kept the Tigers scoreless before expanding their lead in the eighth inning. The Pilots scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Nitowitz and a two-run double from Salk, bringing the Portland advantage to 8-2. Pacific put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Pilots still coasted to the 8-4 win.
