PORTLAND, Ore. -- Kaden Starr had everything working on Monday, striking out eight Utah Valley hitters over five innings of work, but it was not enough as the Portland Pilots lost to the Wolverines 11-2.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Starr (0-1) threw five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and walking four for Portland (9-16). Offensively, the Pilots drove in just two runs, with Spencer Scott's RBI single in the seventh highlighting the scoring. Tyler Howard went 1-for-4 to maintain his hitting streak, extending the streak to 14 games now.
How it Happened
Trailing 2-0, the Pilots first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Cole Katayama-Stall came across to score the lone run of the inning off a wild pitch to get Portland on the board.
The Pilots deficit grew to 6-1 after a four-run sixth inning for Utah Valley. Portland scored once in the seventh on an RBI single from Scott, which tightened the Wolverines lead to 6-2. The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as Utah Valley added five runs in the ninth on the way to an 11-2 final.
