SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Portland dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 69 Santa Clara in West Coast Conference men's tennis action Thursday at Degheri Tennis Center. The match featured multiple rain delays before the Broncos were able to complete the victory.
The Pilots (6-6, 0-2 WCC) got a doubles win from the No. 3 tandem of Tom Garcia and Lucas Kimelman, but the Broncos (11-7, 2-1) took the point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 and 7-5 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Santa Clara picked up straight set wins at No. 3 and no. 4 singles, respectively, to jump ahead 3-0. Valentin Faure clinched the match with a three-set victory against Cade Fernando at No. 6.
Portland senior Maxim Groysman forced a third set at No. 1, as did freshman Lucas Kimelman at No. 5, while junior Nikola Keremedchiev was in a second set tiebreaker when the overall match was clinched.
The Pilots will look to rebound with another road WCC matchup on Saturday at Saint Mary's with a 2 p.m. start.
