VILLANOVA, Penn. -- Trista Hull collected a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the Portland Pilots fell to the Villanova Wildcats 71-61 on the road Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament. The loss ends the season for the Pilots.
The Pilots (31-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Emme Shearer, who had 17 points. Hull added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and McKelle Meek added eight points, seven assists and two steals.
The loss ends what has been a historic season for Portland. They end the year with a program-record 31 wins, the second most ever by a WCC team. They earned a share of the regular season title for the WCC with a 17-3 record in conference play, advanced to the WCC Tournament Championship for the third straight season and put together two postseason wins to reach five all-time as a Division I program in the playoffs.
How It Happened
Portland struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Pilots continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 36-24 halftime deficit.
Following halftime, Portland came out swinging with a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Hull, to trim its deficit to 38-33 with 7:33 to go in the third, forcing an early Villanova timeout. Villanova countered and stretched its lead to 53-44 heading into the fourth.
Villanova kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 69-50 advantage before Portland went on an 8-0 run to shrink the deficit to 69-58 with 52 seconds to go in the contest. It was too little too late, as the Wildcats held on for the 71-61 win.
