Santa Cruz, Calif. -- The Pilots took two losses against the Waves and Gaels on first day of West Coast Challenge. 

Portland battled a tough opening match against the Waves, dropping five sets early. The ones and twos both had close match-ups, with Stammberger/Wood putting up a strong effort in flight 1s, finishing 21-19, 21-18. In the second match against the Gaels, Freytag/Larsson in flight 2s earned the only win on the day for the Pilots in straight sets. The Pilots couldn't get past the Gaels, falling 4-1.

The Pilots will play in the Silver Bracket tomorrow, facing Santa Clara at 11 a.m., following with a match-up against Pacific at noon.
