PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots earned their fourth walk-off win of the season, taking the Pepperdine Waves down in the 12th inning for an 8-7 win. The win clinched the fourth straight WCC series in a row for Portland this year and seventh straight dating back to last year.
Nolan Umlandt (1-3) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Portland (16-20, 9-3). The right-hander went two innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Ryan Rembisz also made an impact on the mound for the Pilots, starting the ballgame and throwing 6.2 innings, giving up four runs, all earned, on six hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Offensively, the Pilots were paced by Jonas Salk, who went 2-for-5 on the day with two home runs and three RBI's. Brady Bean compiled a standout performance as well, going 2-for-5 with a double, a walk and two RBI's. Cody Nitowitz also helped out for Portland, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a walk and scoring the winning run for Portland.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the board in the second inning down 1-0. Portland plated two runs when Salk left the yard for his seventh homer of the year, giving the Pilots a 2-1 lead.
The Pilots lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 3-2. The Portland offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by Salk's second home run and his eighth of the year. The Pilots led 6-3 after the fifth.
Things went cold for Portland after that, with Pepperdine scoring three runs across the seventh and the eighth to tie it up at six. Portland had no luck scoring in the ninth, leading to extra innings for the fourth time this year.
Both teams went scoreless until the 12th inning. Pepperdine scored once in the top frame, putting the Pilots down 7-6. The Pilots scored once on Bean's RBI double to tie things up at seven. Doyle Kane went to the plate with runners on second and third, hitting a hard grounder to second that gave Nitowitz just enough time to get home. The Pilots won 8-7.
