PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 53 Pacific in West Coast Conference men's tennis action Thursday at Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots conclude the 2025 season with a 7-10 overall record and 1-5 mark in WCC play.
Pacific took a hard-fought doubles point to grab the early edge. Portland's No. 1 duo of Maxim Groysman and Stefan Skobelev earned a 6-3 win against the No. 65-ranked tandem of Ran Amar and Christof Schaertlin Coffey, but the Tigers won 6-0 at No. 3 and 7-5 at No. 2 to take the point.
Skobelev evened the score with a 6-1, 7-5 win against Amar at No. 3 singles for the Pilots. Pacific regained the lead with a win at No. 2 singles. Groysman and Tiago Silva played an intense match at No. 1 singles with Silva holding on for the 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
Jonty Giesen clinched the team win for Pacific with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5. Portland's Tom Garcia was two points away from winning his match against Vraj Patel at No. 4 by a score of 6-1, 6-5 when the match was stopped.
"The positives of the last couple of weeks is that we have really been trending upward and playing better doubles and singles," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "The downside is the last three teams we played were just really good and we weren't able to see the results that would have been there against lesser teams. We left a couple of big ones on the table in the middle of the season that could have really swung our season even if we had lost these last few.
"It was senior day for Max and we had a couple of alumni travel from long distances to be there for him. He did not disappoint. He played incredible tennis, as he has for the last few weeks, but just didn't get the W. Max has meant a lot to our program and I'm proud to have coached him. He's left an impact with his competitiveness and his personality that will always be appreciated at the University of Portland."
Groysman is the lone senior on the Portland roster. The Bellevue, Wash. native completed his third season with Portland and anchored the top of the lineup with five wins at No. 1 singles and five doubles win as well this Spring.
