EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland Pilots scored six runs across the seventh and eighth innings and came back from trailing by five runs to defeat the No. 13 Oregon Ducks 10-9 in Eugene. The win gives Portland two games over the Ducks for the first time since 2018.
The win goes to Nolan Umlandt, who pitched 1.2 innings for Portland (18-23, 9-6 WCC) and allowed just one hit and no runs. Kaden Segel earned his third save of the year, throwing the final 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and no runs allowed.
The Pilots had 10 runs on eight hits, led by Zach Toglia's monster day. Toglia went 2-for-4 with a home run, his eighth of the year, and four RBI's. His four RBI's matched a season-high. Brady Bean added three RBI's with a home run, his seventh of the season.
How it Happened
The Pilots got in a hole early, conceding five runs in the first inning. Portland responded in the second inning, with Zach Toglia launching his eighth homer of the year to bring in two runs and make it 5-2 Ducks.
The Ducks tacked on two more before the Pilots got back on the board. Portland scored on a wild pitch and a groundout in the top of the fourth, making it 7-4 Oregon.
Oregon extended their lead in the sixth, but the Pilots closed the gap and overtook the Ducks in the seventh inning. Portland scored three runs in the seventh, with Doyle Kane and Zach Toglia hitting RBI singles right up the middle that made it just 9-7 Ducks.
In the eighth inning, the Pilots took over. With two runners on, Brady Bean stepped to the plate and launched a three-run shot over the left field wall, giving Portland a 10-9 lead, their first of the game.
