PORTLAND, Ore. – For the fifth time this season, the Portland Pilots won on a walk-off homer, with Jonas Salk getting Portland the 10-9 victory in 11 innings over the Santa Clara Broncos. This is the fifth win in extra innings for Portland as well.
Nolan Umlandt shined on the mound for Portland, throwing four hitless innings with five strikeouts. Logan Anderson pitched the final inning for Portland to earn the win.
The Pilots had 10 runs on 13 hits, with five batters earning multiple hits. Salk went 3-for-6 with two home runs and two RBI's, his third multi-home run game of the season. Tyler Howard extended his on-base streak to 29 games and went 3-for-5 with a home run – his second of the year – and a double. Zach Toglia added a home run as well, batting 2-for-5, with Cody Nitowitz and Coleman Hollabaugh rounding out the multi-hit batters.
How it Happened
Santa Clara got on the board in the first inning with a solo homer. The Pilots evened it back up quickly, with Jonas Salk's ninth home run of the year. Salk's homer made it 1-1 after two innings.
Portland built on that lead, scoring four runs across the fourth and fifth innings. Cody Nitowitz hit a two-run single in the fourth and Zach Toglia hit a two-run bomb in the fifth to make it 5-1 Pilots.
The Pilots gave up eight runs in the sixth, but bounced back in the bottom frame with two runs off a double from Brady Bean. The Pilots still trailed 9-7 until Tyler Howard tied it up in the eighth, evening the score with a two-run homer, his second of the year and the third of the game for the Pilots. The Pilots held the Broncos scoreless the rest of the way to force extra innings.
Salk came up to the plate to start the 11th inning. On the first pitch he saw, Salk smoked it over the wall in left center to give Portland the 10-9 win.
