PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots scored 10 runs in the fifth inning, dominating the Santa Clara Broncos all the way through for a 16-2 win in just seven innings. The Pilots claim the series with the win.
Carter Gaston (3-7) started on the mound and pitched the full seven innings in the win for Portland (20-23, 11-6). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits, allowing four walks and striking out four.
Trey Swygart went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and a walk in addition to his five RBI' s for the Pilots. Tyler Howard put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk and four RBI's to extend his on-base streak to 30 games. Jonas Salk also helped out for Portland, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI's.
How it Happened
The Pilots got the scoring started early, putting four runs on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Portland got a grand slam from Swygart, scoring all four of their runs in the inning.
The Pilots then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the third inning after the Broncos cut it to 4-1. Salk came across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland, which brought the Pilots lead to 5-1.
Portland kept Santa Clara without a run before expanding their lead to 6-1 the following inning. The Pilots notched a run on Salk's one-out RBI double.
Portland held the Broncos scoreless before their offense got things rolling the next inning. The Pilots scored 10 runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Howard, bringing the score to 16-1 in favor of Portland. Santa Clara put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Pilots still coasted to the 16-2 win.
