MORAGA, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots put together three runs across the final two innings, but the late-game rally came up short as they fell 12-9 to the Saint Mary's Gaels Sunday. The Pilots still took the series in Moraga.
Ryan Rembisz (4-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Portland (14-18, 7-2). Offensively, the Pilots were led by Jonas Salk, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double, two home runs and two RBI's. He's the first Pilot to hit multiple home runs in a single game this season, with his season total sitting now at six. Brady Bean compiled a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI.
Tyler Howard also helped out for Portland, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI's, extending his on-base streak to 25 games. Riley McCarthy and Cody Nitowitz each compiled two hits as well, rounding out the multi-hit batters for Portland.
How it Happened
The Pilots scored twice in the second inning, bringing one run in on a groundout and another on a solo home run from Salk. The Gaels answered back with five runs in the bottom frame to take the lead back from the Pilots at 5-2.
Portland scored two runs in the fourth, the highlight being an RBI single from Doyle Kane, before the Gaels scored four more to extend their lead to 9-4. Bean's solo home run in the fifth cut into the lead slightly, but Saint Mary's scored two on an RBI double in the same inning to make it 11-5 Gaels.
Salk's second homer came in the sixth inning, but once again the Gaels quickly responded with a run of their own to make it 12-6. The Pilots added three runs across the final two innings, with two coming from Howard and another from Nolan Miller, but it wasn't enough. The Gaels won 12-9.
