SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Despite a late push, the Portland Pilots fell in their rubber match against the San Francisco Dons 9-6.
Curtis Hebert (2-1) takes his first loss of the year for Portland (21-26, 12-9 WCC). Ryan Rembisz had the start, going six innings and allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
The Pilots got six runs on 10 hits, led by freshman Cole Katayama-Stall. He went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and four RBI's, matching a career-high. Tyler Howard went 2-for-5 as well while Zach Toglia hit a solo home run, his 10th of the season.
How it Happened
The Pilots got started early with two runs in the top of the first, courtesy of Cole Katayama-Stall. The runs put the Pilots up 2-0 early.
The Pilots lost the lead in the fourth inning, giving up four runs in the bottom frame. The Dons got a pair of two-run singles that made it 4-2 San Francisco through four.
Portland retook the lead late in the ball game. Doyle Kane hit an RBI single and Katayama-Stall added his second two-run single of the day in the sixth and seventh innings respectively. The Pilots led 5-4 after the top of the seventh.
But the lead was short-lived. The Dons brought in two runs off a home run from Kody Watanabe in the bottom of the seventh. They followed that with an RBI single to make it 7-5 Dons.
The Dons added two more runs in the eighth to give themselves some cushion. Zach Toglia hit a solo bomb in the ninth, but it was too little too late. The Pilots fell 9-6.
