SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots needed just seven innings to take down the San Francisco Dons in the opening game of the series, winning 13-3.
Morgan Codron earned the win for Portland (21-24, 12-7 WCC), throwing six innings with eight strikeouts and just three runs allowed. Nolan Umlandt threw a shutout inning for the Pilots with three strikeouts.
The Pilots were hot at the plate, recording 13 runs on 14 hits. Trey Swygart went an impressive 4-for-4 with two RBI's and a home run, his fifth of the season. His four hits were also a career high. Brady Bean and Jonas Salk both impressed, going 3-for-4 and 2-for-4 respectively with four RBI's each and Cole Katayama-Stall added his seventh home run of the year. Tyler Howard did not record a hit, but extended his on-base streak to 32 games, still the longest by a Pilot since 1993.
With the win, Portland clinched their spot in the 2025 WCC Baseball Tournament in Las Vegas. This is the fourth year in a row that they've qualified for the tournament, a program first.
How it Happened
Portland scored first, putting up two runs in their opening frame. Brady Bean and Jonas Salk each hit RBI singles to bring in a run each, making it 2-0 Portland.
The Pilots added to that lead the following inning, when Bean drove in his second RBI on the day with hard single to left field.
The Dons responded in the third with an RBI single of their own, but the Pilots quickly put their lead back at three runs with another RBI single from Bean. The Dons scored twice in the bottom frame to make it 4-3 Portland.
The offense exploded for Portland in the fifth, with the Pilots adding seven runs in the inning. Jonas Salk and Cole Katayama-Stall highlighted the inning, with Salk clearing the bases with a double to add three runs and Katayama-Stall hitting his seventh home run of the year to add two more. The Pilots also scored on a sac fly and a walk to make it 11-3 Portland.
Trey Swygart hit a two-run bomb in the sixth inning to make it 13-3 Pilots. That homer closed out the scoring as the Pilots cruised to a win in seven innings.
