KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the first time ever in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and the first time in any poll since 1992, the Portland Pilots are ranked No. 1 in the nation. They were a unanimous selection, earning all eight first-place votes.
Portland earns the ranking after what's been a stellar start to the season, sitting at 7-0-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in WCC play with a win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs last weekend. The Pilots are unbeaten through eight for the first time since 2022 and their 7-0-1 record is the best through eight games since 1988. They currently hold an unbeaten streak of 18 games that dates back to last season, which is also the second longest in the nation.
The Pilots are among the top in the nation in numerous categories statistically, leading the nation in goals per game (3.00) and assists per game (3.63), ranking second in goal differential (22), shutout percentage (.875), assists (29), third in goals-against average (.286), fourth in points (77) and 10
th in goals (24). They have posted seven clean sheets in eight games for the first time ever and their plus-22 goal differential is the highest they've posted in a fall season since 1999.
Portland has been a mainstay of the rankings under head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. They've been ranked in the top 10 nationally each of the last four seasons, ranking as high as third in 2023. They've also made the NCAA Tournament three of the last four seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in 2022 for the first time since 1995. It's the first time a WCC team has been ranked No. 1 overall since Santa Clara in 1999.
The Pilots are in action tonight, Sept. 30 against the FIU Panthers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with tickets available at PortlandPilots.com/Tickets. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options as well.
