SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland guard Joel Foxwell continues to make his mark on the West Coast Conference, earning Freshman of the Week honors for the fifth time this season. Foxwell shares this week's award with Santa Clara's Sash Gavalyugov.
Foxwell has now claimed the honor in half of the 10 weeks of play during the 2025-26 season. Since the start of the 2023-24 campaign, Portland freshmen have earned the award 15 times, nearly once every three weeks.
The Melbourne, Australia native led the Pilots to a thrilling home sweep of Pacific (90-89, OT) and Oregon State (82-76) last week. Foxwell averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 assists, and 2.5 rebounds over the two games. Against Pacific, he posted a season-high 27 points and seven assists, hitting 5-of-6 from three-point range and all four free throws. His clutch three-pointer in overtime and two late assists sealed the comeback victory. He followed up with 18 points, six assists, and two steals against Oregon State.
Foxwell continues one of the best freshman campaigns in program history. He is averaging a team-high 14.6 points and 7.2 assists per game. He leads the conference in total assists (137) and assists per game and ranks third and fifth nationally in the two categories, respectively. He also leads all freshmen nationally in both stats and is on pace to break Portland's single-season assist record. Last week, Foxwell surpassed Pilot legend Darwin Cook for the most assists by a freshman in program history (128). He has recorded three double-doubles and scored 20+ points six times this season.
The Pilots will hit the road for a pair of West Coast Conference games next week. Portland will visit Pepperdine on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. tip-off and then take on LMU on Saturday at 6 p.m.
