EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon Ducks defeated the Portland Pilots by a 4-0 margin Saturday in men's tennis action at the Student Tennis Center. The Pilots fall to 1-1, while Oregon improves to 4-0.
The Ducks secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions, respectively. Stefan Skobelev and Tom Garcia were on serve leading 5-4 when the point was clinched and their match went unfinished.
Portland battled in singles with Tannor Binder, Lucas Kimelman and Cade Fernando pushing their respective matches to three sets, but the Ducks were able to secure wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 positions to conclude the match.
"Oregon was better than us tonight," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "I think we competed well in several spots and our guys are in good physical condition, but we're at the very beginning of the season and getting used to the intensity of dual matches. The quick turnaround from last night may have cost as the night went on. But credit to Oregon, they were better than us. It was a great weekend of tennis to get us going in the right direction."
Portland will make its home debut on Saturday, Jan. 24 against the Portland State Vikings with a 10 a.m. start at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. Live coverage links are available at PortlandPilots.com.
