MORAGA, Calif. – The Portland Pilots battled in Moraga but ultimately fell 78-57 to the Saint Mary's Gaels. The loss puts Portland at 7-9 this year and 0-3 in WCC play.
Jermaine Ballisager Webb led the Pilots in scoring with 13 points and five boards, coming just one point shy of his season high. Joel Foxwell and Cameron Williams each had nine points, with Foxwell adding six assists. Foxwell's posted at least five assists in 12 games this season. Paulius Murauskas of the Gaels led all scorers with 24 points along with seven boards.
Portland grabbed 33 boards in the contest, led by a strong effort from Dante-Censori Hercules, who had a career-high 12 rebounds. The 12 boards from the freshman are the most by a Pilot in any game this year. Portland had 34 points in the paint, six more than the Gaels.
How it Happened
Portland gave up an early 10-2 run but quickly bounced back with a 6-0 run themselves to bring it back within two points. Portland kept pace from there, working their way inside offensively while trying to limit the chances for the Gaels. All of Portland's points came inside the arc or at the free throw line in the first half, including 24 points inside the paint. Paulius Murauskas scored 13 points in the first half and the Gaels hit six 3-pointers, with Saint Mary's ending the half on an 8-2 run to take a 42-27 lead.
The Gaels hit two quick threes to start the second half and put the Pilots down 19. Portland hit one shot from outside – a 3-pointer via Foxwell – to bring it within 16 but never closed the gap. Portland ended up dropping the contest 78-57.
