LAKEVILLE, Mass. – The Portland women's tennis team got off to a great start to the dual season with a 7-0 sweep of Stonehill College on the road Friday at Lakeville Athletic Club.
The Pilots were dominant from start-to-finish and set the tone early by winning all three doubles matches. The No. 3 tandem of Nadine Arbaizar Martinez and Meagan Pearson cruised to a 6-1 win and then Portland clinched with a 6-3 win at No. 1 by Alaia Rubio Perez and Maria Galatescu. The Pilot No. 2 duo of Dariya Radulova and Lexie Flores capped the doubles session with a 6-3 win.
The momentum carried into singles with Galetescu cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 to double the Pilot lead. Rubio Perez won 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the lineup and then Radulova won via retirement while leading 6-4, 1-0 at No. 2 to clinch the team victory.
Arbaizar Martinez was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 4 and Flores and Pearson also picked up straight set wins to secure the 7-0 sweep.
"This was a lot more physically and mentally challenging than what the score reflects," Portland head coach Filip Zivkovic said. "We weathered the storm early and handled business in doubles, which set the tone for the rest of the match. I am really happy with our level of play, this team put in a lot of hard work over the last few months and it showed today. Our confidence grew with every point and we executed at a very high level at every position."
Portland will continue its Northeast road trip with a match Saturday against Brown University at 10 a.m. (PT) and conclude the trip at Bryant on Sunday at 10:15 a.m.
"Brown will be a great early season test," Zivkovic noted. "We are all excited to have the opportunity to compete at that level. Go Pilots!"
